Coping With Uncertainty: My New Best Friend

Uncertainty is a natural part of life.

We all experience moments where we don't have complete clarity about what's happening or what will happen next.

While some people may thrive on the excitement of not knowing, for many of us, uncertainty can be uncomfortable and even anxiety-provoking because when we're uncertain, we feel vulnerable.

Our brains have evolved to seek out information and predictability as a way of keeping us safe.

When we don't have that predictability, our subconscious protection mechanisms kick in, making us feel worried and anxious and causing us to imagine all kinds of fears and worst-case scenarios.

But here's the good news: feeling anxious when experiencing uncertainty is entirely normal.

It's a natural response to a situation that feels vulnerable. Recognizing and accepting this feeling is the first step in managing it.

I should know!

Let me tell you a story about how uncertainty has been a significant factor in my life recently.

I used to run a travel business, which was my dream job and my passion for many years.

However, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, travel restrictions were put in place, and the industry came to a standstill.

It was a scary time for me as I saw my business crumble before my eyes. I was uncertain about my future and what I was going to do next.

But, as they say, every cloud has a silver lining.

I took this as an opportunity to use my transferable skills, expand on my former career as a teacher, and become a coach.

It was something that had been on my mind for a while, as while travelling full-time was fun, it was also exhausting, and the pandemic provided the push I needed to make it happen.

However, even as I started coaching, uncertainty lingered in the background. I wasn't sure if I could successfully transition to coaching, if I'd enjoy it or if I could support myself financially.

As the last few years have passed, I decided to follow my passion and retrain again as an EFT Practitioner and now as a counsellor, which has meant additional uncertainty, questioning, costs and time.

But uncertainty is a part of life, and it's something that we have to learn to live with.

Instead of letting the anxiety, fear, and vulnerability control me, I started to accept it and double down on using tools to manage my mindset, mental health and well-being. After all, that's why I feel so passionately about EFT Tapping.

Through this journey, I learned that while uncertainty is uncomfortable and even scary, it's also an opportunity for change, growth and transformation.

We live in unpredictable times, and it's important to be adaptable and open to change. By embracing uncertainty and taking action despite it, we can create the life we want and achieve our dreams.

And I've always come to remember that we are only one decision away from changing our life. If something doesn't meet your expectations or doesn't suit you, you can, at any time, change your mind and make a new decision.

So if you're feeling uncertain right now, know that you're not alone. It's a normal part of the human experience, and there are things you can do to manage it.

So, how can you cope with uncertainty? Here are three tips:

  1. Practice mindfulness: When you feel anxious and uncertain, your thoughts can circle or spiral out of control. Mindfulness techniques, such as grounding practices, deep breathing and meditation, can help you stay connected in the present moment and avoid getting lost in worry and anxiety.

  2. Use EFT Tapping: EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) Tapping is a self-help tool that involves tapping on specific acupressure points on the body while focusing on speaking about a specific problem or issue aloud. This technique is scientifically proven to reduce the stress hormone cortisol and help you feel calmer in uncertain situations and more.

  3. Reach out for support: You don't have to go through uncertainty alone. Talk to a trusted friend or family member, or seek out professional support from a therapist or counsellor. Sharing your concerns with someone else can help you gain perspective and feel less alone in your experience. EFT Tapping is proven to help anxiety and stress, so if this is something you've been struggling with a long time please book a free consultation with me to see how working with me, either short or long-term, can help.
